About Good Food @ Home
INTRODUCTION
to GOOD FOOD @ HOME
Hello, thank you for the opportunity to introduce my small, local business to you.
Good Food @ Home has been developed over many conversations with friends, family, neighbours, who are aware that their parent, friend, loved one who loves to eat good food, is either not bothering to shop, cook and eat for themselves, or is not catered for by the very narrow, and often unhealthy range of ready-meals available.
Although some people have Carers or Personal Assistants visiting, sometimes daily, few carers have any interest in cooking simple but appetising food, let alone presenting this in an attractive way that encourages appetite. Many carers have little or no knowledge of nutrition, or interest in healthy, balanced eating.
Whilst there are many very good delivery services, these meals are very expensive for single portions, and are often full of additives, salt and preservatives, and also come with a lot of packaging to either recycle or send to landfill. They also lack the little touches that can lift a meal from dull to interesting: fresh herbs, garnishes, a crispy salad, thoughtful presentation, a healthy and tasty fruit salad or a more indulgent dessert to finish.
They’re not particularly well-balanced either: Wholemeal items are rarely available, a wide range of vegetables go un-represented, and fibre content often negligible, except in the form of pulses, which are not to everybody’s taste.
Working as a carer myself, I wondered if there could be a middle way, and when I met clients for whom the contract was simply to prepare food, I was saddened by the lack of care about the food, and the reliance on supermarket ready meals.
These clients were always appreciative when I managed to make their plates a little more appetising with what garnishes or ingredients were to hand.
INTENTION
Good Food @ Home sets out to offer a service to clients who love to eat, but who may have a small appetite, find cooking for one a chore, or who maybe are not mobile enough to stand for some time whilst preparing fruit and vegetables.
Following a consultation with the client to ascertain their “yums” and “yuks”, foods they love, foods they hate, foods they must not have for medical reasons, I will work out a meal plan with them.
From there, clients can either shop with me, shop online, or even shop for themselves if they want to, so that they have all the ingredients needed for my cooking / preparation visits. With the client buying the food themselves, they can choose whichever ingredients suit their budget, and which brands they prefer.
FLEXIBILITY
I can be completely flexible to adapt to the individual’s preference.
Visits could be once a day, twice weekly, or every few days depending on the clients’ preference and budget.
A daily visit would generally be to prepare a fresh, appealing, seasonally appropriate lunch from the clients’ own ingredients and store cupboard contents, leaving a light supper and an appetising dessert for later that day.
Twice-weekly visits might involve preparing several days’ supply of fresh meals and refrigerating them for the client to heat themselves as and when they want to eat them.
Visits with a larger gap between them may involve batch-cooking and freezing, or simply the preparation of several days’ worth of fresh fruit and vegetables.
It goes without saying that each personal visit provides a little companionship for the client, as well as a caring and discreet overview of the clients’ moods and coping abilities, and an opportunity to alert family or friends to any concerns.
OTHER CARERS
Good Food @ Home is not designed to be a replacement for a carer who fulfils other needs, such as physical support, physical help with eating, catheter care or any of the other roles heroically filled by the army of highly trained and dedicated Professional Carers already working in the field.
